Join the YNPNdc Board of Directors

The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Washington, DC (YNPNdc)’s mission is to elevate, energize, and educate the Washington DC Metro nonprofit community by sharing resources, building skills, and fostering connections. Our Board of Directors leads our community of 30+ volunteers in all aspects of the organization’s programming, communications, membership services, and strategic visioning and implementation.

This is an opportunity to be part of a community of passionate individuals looking to make a difference for peers in the nonprofit space. We are especially eager to bring in new Directors seeking to contribute time and energy (3 hours / week) to our commitment to equity, volunteer coordination, and organizational/Board development. Directors will have an opportunity to lead a volunteer committee, play an integral role in strategic planning, and serve a local audience of 2,500+ plugged into the YNPNdc network. Board Members are expected to commit to at least a two-year term (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2025).

We are looking for candidates who are interested in performing the required responsibilities as listed in the descriptions below. Keep in mind that YNPNdc values professional growth and development, so it is not required to possess all of the preferred qualifications to apply. 

YNPNdc is a community of forward-thinking and inspired nonprofit professionals who are effecting change. We offer networking, professional development, mentorship, advocacy opportunities, and more. Membership is open to all. 

YNPNdc is an independent 501(c)(3) organization, affiliated with the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN), which serves more than 50,000 members and includes chapters in more than 40 cities. 

Treasurer

The Treasurer manages and administers organizational finances and other fiscal matters. As the primary financial agent for the organization, the Treasurer practices responsible fiscal stewardship and ensures compliance by working closely with the Board Chair, Executive Committee, and various Board and Leadership Team Members.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer organizational finances and all YNPNdc fiscal matters.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and locals laws related to financial management.
  • Manage accounts receivable and payable.
  • Prepare invoices, receipts, and tax documents.
  • File annual reports with the Internal Revenue Service and District Government.
  • Manage the organization’s cash flow and monitor bank accounts.
  • Share monthly and quarterly financial reports and updates with the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare annual budgeting documents, projections, and an annual report.
  • Facilitate the creation and approval of an annual budget in coordination with leaders from each committee.
  • Facilitate the development and review of YNPNdc financial policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Ensure adherence to YNPNdc’s financial practices, including the financial authorization policy.
  • Provide ongoing education on financial matters for Board Members and Management team.
  • Serve as the primary owner of the YNPNdc debit card.
    Serve as a member of the Governance Committee, including discussing issues pertaining to the sustainability and strategic direction of YNPNdc. This includes key decision-making in-between Board meetings as needed (using our by-laws as a guide). The Governance Committee meets monthly and serves as a check and balance for the board.
  • Fulfill general responsibilities of Board of Directors. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building and managing budgets of more than $40,000 preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss financial documents.

Secretary

The Board Secretary manages administrative and information governance functions for the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include overseeing organization-wide policies, contracts, internal communications systems, and ensuring policies and practices are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare agendas and distribute materials to the Board of Directors for official meetings at least 48 hours in advance of meetings.
  • Assume primary note-taking and minute review responsibilities at all official meetings.
  • Facilitate Board meetings in absence of the co-chairs.
  • Track Board meeting attendance of Board members to YNPNdc.
  • Update, maintain, and ensure the accuracy of YNPNdc records, policies, and operations manual.
  • Update the bylaws and policy manual in coordination with the Governance Committee.
  • Maintain internal communication and knowledge management systems (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Groups, Slack) for governance and operations functions.
  • Set up Google, Google Groups, and Slack accounts for new volunteers.
  • Implement and report on organizational information governance and security practices.
  • Manage centralized calendar for the Board of Directors (Google Calendar).
  • Serve as a member of the Governance Committee, including discussing issues pertaining to the sustainability and strategic direction of YNPNdc. This includes key decision-making in-between Board meetings as needed (using our by-laws as a guide). The Governance Committee meets monthly and serves as a check and balance for the board.
  • Fulfill general responsibilities of Board of Directors.

Director of Fundraising and Development

In this volunteer role, the Director of Fundraising and Development is responsible for overseeing the Fundraising Committee and YNPNdc’s overall fundraising strategy, including individual giving, grants, and corporate partnerships. This position is a member of the Board of Directors for YNPNdc, and as such, entails working collaboratively with the full Board to ensure the success of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversees Fundraising and Development programs and strategic goals.
  • Serves as Chair of the Fundraising Committee, which entails providing guidance on development efforts for the organization and other committees.
  • Manages the volunteers of the Fundraising Committee
  • Establishes grant funding goals
  • Coordinates and leads the writing of grant proposals with the Fundraising Committee volunteers and the Board of Directors.
  • Manages any paid vendors, such as grant writers or campaign consultants
  • Creates Fundraising and Development campaign communications
  • Creation of draft and template materials for Board, Committee, & Volunteer Asks
  • Works in conjunction with the Communications Committee and Membership Engagement Committee.
  • Implements fundraising based Prospect Research and maintains its supporting documents
  • Track and share based reports and data presentations to the Board of Directors
  • Works collaboratively with the Chair(s) of the Governance, Programs, Membership Engagement and Volunteer Committees, as well as with any ad hoc committees that may form.
  • Responsible for ensuring support to Board & Program-related goals.
  • Responsible for fundraising-related reports to boards and committees.
  • Fulfill general responsibilities of Board of Directors.  

 

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Establish organizational sponsorship goals and maintenance of sponsorship-related documents
  • Serves as a backup to volunteer responsibilities

Director of Networking

One of the pillars of YNPNdc’s mission is to energize the Washington DC metro nonprofit community by providing opportunities to foster connections and networks. In this volunteer role, the Director of Networking is responsible for creating and implementing YNPNdc’s overall networking strategy, working with a talented team of volunteers on the Programs Committee. This strategy currently includes monthly Happy Hour events.

This position is a member of the Board of Directors for YNPNdc, and as such, entails working collaboratively with the full Board to ensure the success of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Learning and Director of Mentorship to build an annual programming plan and submit a corresponding annual programs budget to the full board. The Programs Committee will be responsible for updating the plan and programs budget on an annual basis.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of YNPNdc networking programming.
  • Maintain a volunteer and Board staffing plan for YNPNdc networking events. Provide a method to track Board of Directors presence at events and, in partnership with the Governance Committee, hold the Board of Directors accountable for attending events.
  • Collaborate with other board members and volunteers to analyze survey data. Identify opportunities to integrate programming into monthly events based on survey findings.
  • Work with the Governance Committee and other Directors to establish and maintain strategic relationships with partner organizations to support the planning and execution of networking programs.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Committee for marketing and follow up for all events
  • With support from the full board, define and implement methods of evaluating YNPNdc networking programming for impact, reach, participant satisfaction and other measures as needed. Regularly identify new opportunities for programming in the area of networking.
  • Fulfill general responsibilities of Board of Directors.

Director of Learning Programs

In this volunteer role, the Director of Learning Programs is responsible for creating and implementing YNPNdc’s overall educational programs strategy, working with a talented team of volunteers on the Programs Committee. This strategy currently includes the quarterly Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Speaker Series and bi-monthly Inner Circles events.

This position is a member of the Board of Directors for YNPNdc, and as such, entails working collaboratively with the full Board to ensure the success of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

Director of Mentorship

In this volunteer role, the Director of Mentorship will be responsible for the operational success of YNPNdc’s Mentoring Program through volunteer team management, program delivery, quality control, and evaluation. The Director of Mentorship will be the main, external face of the Mentoring Program to the community.

The Director of Mentorship is responsible for overseeing YNPNdc’s overall strategy for providing mentorship opportunities and leads a talented team of volunteers that serve on the Programs Committee. This position is a member of the Board of Directors for YNPNdc, and as such, entails working collaboratively with the full Board to ensure the success of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement YNPNdc’s annual Mentorship Program, including professional development events for participants and other events
  • Ensure programmatic excellence, program evaluation and consistent quality.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training, orientation, and management of mentorship program volunteers.
  • Evaluate program regularly to measure success during and after, and implement changes based on evaluations.
  • Build or cultivate existing relationships with vendors and partner organizations to ensure sufficient space, resources, and access to services
  • Work with other Directors to cross-market YNPNdc programs to other program participants.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Committee for marketing and communications for the program.
  • Represent the organization at key events, making and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Work with the Director of Learning and Director of Mentorship to build an annual programming plan and submit a corresponding annual programs budget to the full board. The Programs Committee will be responsible for updating the plan and programs budget on an annual basis.
  • Serves as a backup to volunteer responsibilities.
